Gartic Phone Review

Rating: 4.5 / 5 — the best browser drawing-and-guessing party game we’ve played.
Gartic Phone is the free browser version of telephone, except instead of whispering phrases, you draw them. A phrase becomes a drawing, the drawing becomes a guess at a phrase, the phrase becomes another drawing, and so on. At the end of the chain, the gallery reveal is where the game earns its keep. Play it here.
How it works
One player in the chain is shown a short phrase (e.g. “chimpanzee eating pizza”). They draw it. The next player sees the drawing and writes what they think it shows. The next player draws that phrase. The chain continues for as many players as you invite. When the round ends, the original phrase, the intermediate drawings, and the intermediate guesses are shown side by side. By round four, the phrase has usually drifted into something completely different.
That drift is the joke. The game is not about guessing right — it is about watching how the phrase mutates as it travels through bad drawings and confident misinterpretations.
Player count sweet spot
Twelve to sixteen players is the sweet spot. With under eight players the chain collapses too quickly, the drift is mild, and the reveal feels short. With over twenty on the free tier, the lobby fills up and the chain slows to a crawl. Twelve to sixteen gives you enough drift for five or six rounds, and the round structure holds attention.
Why it pairs well with vocal games
Gartic Phone and The Choicer Voicer sit in adjacent slots on a game-night rotation. Choicer Voicer is the high-energy vocal performance piece. Gartic Phone is the quieter, drawing-based round that lets the room recover between vocal rounds. Both are free, both run in a browser, both work on the same Wi-Fi network.
We have run test game nights where the format was: Choicer Voicer warmup, Gartic Phone main course, Choicer Voicer close. The energy level stays high without ever tipping into exhaustion. Drawing rounds give voices a chance to rest, vocal rounds give hands a chance to rest.
Where it falls short
Public lobbies have open text chat. That is great for adults, less great for kids. Use private rooms with codes for any group with minors. The free tier has some ads, which the paid tier removes.
Drawing skills are not required, but players who freeze up when asked to draw will not enjoy it. If your group has one or two self-conscious drawers, this is the round they will tap out of. Choose the order accordingly.
Verdict
Gartic Phone is the rare browser drawing game that holds up across groups, ages, and skill levels. The chain reveal is consistently funny, the format scales to most game-night sizes, and it pairs naturally with a vocal round. The 4.5/5 rating reflects the fact that this is what we open when the vocal round has run its course. Try a room here.
